Necklace length is measured around the chain, not by how it looks on you, so the same 18 inch chain sits differently on different people. This chart shows each standard length in inches and centimetres, where it usually falls on the body, and how to choose and measure your own.

Necklace length chart: inches, cm and where it sits

Positions below are typical for an average build and neck. Your height, neck length and chain thickness change where a necklace lands by an inch or two.

  • 14 inches (36 cm), choker: sits snug around the base of the neck.
  • 16 inches (41 cm), collar or short choker: sits at the base of the neck, just above the collarbone.
  • 18 inches (46 cm), princess: sits on or just below the collarbone. This is the most common length for pendants and tennis necklaces.
  • 20 inches (51 cm): falls a little below the collarbone and works well for layering.
  • 24 inches (61 cm), matinee: falls on the upper chest, between the collarbone and the bust.
  • 30 inches (76 cm), opera: falls near the bust line. It can be worn long or doubled.
  • 36 inches (91 cm) and longer, rope: falls below the bust. It is usually looped twice or worn as a long statement piece.

How to choose the right necklace length

By neckline

  • Crew neck or high neck: 18 to 24 inches sits above or on top of the neckline. A shorter choker also works.
  • V-neck: a necklace that follows the V, often 16 to 20 inches with a pendant.
  • Scoop neck: 16 to 18 inches fills the open space.
  • Strapless or off the shoulder: 16 to 18 inches frames the collarbone.
  • Turtleneck: 24 inches or longer sits over the knit.

By style

  • Tennis necklace: 16 to 18 inches is the most popular range. Read our tennis necklace guide for stone size and styling.
  • Pendant: 16 to 20 inches keeps the pendant near the collarbone.
  • Layering: choose lengths 2 inches apart, such as 16, 18 and 20 inches, so the chains do not tangle.

How to measure your necklace size

Method 1: Measure a necklace you already own

  1. Lay the necklace flat and fasten the clasp.
  2. Measure along the chain from one end of the clasp to the other.
  3. Compare that number to the chart to see how it sits on you.

Method 2: String or ribbon

  1. Take a piece of string or ribbon and drape it around your neck where you want the necklace to fall.
  2. Mark the point where the ends meet.
  3. Lay the string flat and measure it with a ruler.

Neck size for a choker

Measure around the base of your neck with a soft tape measure and add about 1 to 2 inches so the choker is comfortable and not tight.
