Both are lab-created. Both are certified-conflict-free. Both are dramatically more affordable than a natural diamond of the same size. But they are not the same stone, and the differences are worth understanding before you choose one over the other.

The short answer

Lab-grown diamond is chemically, physically, and optically identical to a natural diamond, just grown in a controlled environment instead of the earth. It's the closer match to what people expect when they picture a diamond, and it carries stronger resale and cultural recognition. Moissanite is a different mineral entirely, nearly as hard, noticeably more fiery in direct light, and typically 85-95% less expensive than a lab-grown diamond of comparable size. Neither is "better" outright; they suit different priorities.

What's the difference, chemically?

Lab-grown diamond is pure carbon, crystallized in the same cubic structure as a mined diamond. Moissanite is silicon carbide, a mineral that occurs naturally only in microscopic, commercially unusable traces (it was first identified in fragments of a meteorite crater). Every moissanite used in jewelry today is created in a lab, a process that's been refined since the mid-1990s.

Hardness and everyday durability

Both stones are more than hard enough for daily wear. Diamond's 10 on the Mohs scale makes it the only material that can scratch another diamond, and moissanite's 9.25 puts it above sapphire and ruby, the next hardest gems commonly used in fine jewelry. No. Moissanite is a genuine gemstone in its own right, silicon carbide, not a diamond simulant like cubic zirconia. It's marketed and priced as its own stone, not as an imitation diamond.

Can a jeweler tell the difference between moissanite and a lab-grown diamond?

Yes, though not always with a standard thermal diamond tester, since moissanite conducts heat in a similar way and can trigger a false positive. Jewelers use dual thermal-and-electrical-conductivity testers, or simply examine the stone's refractive fire under magnification, to tell them apart reliably.

Which is more durable for an everyday ring?

Both hold up well. Diamond has a very slight edge in long-term chip resistance due to its higher hardness, but moissanite at 9.25 Mohs is more than durable enough for daily wear, including rings.
